Sam is in his new home with Heather in Vancouver

Update 11/8/2009 Sam goes Trick or Treating.
Sam is looking really healthy.  He's gained weight and is well-behaved. He is small, but he has webbed feet and makes wookie noises.

Sampson (Sam) was rescued from a Texas shelter, matted all over but a sweetheart.

These are photos (8/22/09)of Sam prior to being shaved down and getting his shots. Sam is pictured on Lake Livingston on a nice relaxing day with his foster family.  He ate chicken fingers all day and lounged around. You can't see the horrendous mats under his tail and his belly.

And yes, he enjoyed boating.

Updated reports from the foster mom:

He's a tiny thing.  Note the bones jutting from his hips.  His head also has jutting bones.  He's calming down a lot and is getting much better behaved.  However, he does have occasionally accidents in the house and he chases my cats. (if they did not run he would not chase them)

I opted for the slow kill method for the heartworms. This treatment is the easiest on a dog as there is no requirement for confinement and the vet felt that Sam was a good candidate for this way of treatment.   Sam is only being given heartguard for his heart worms. The heart guard will kill the babies but not the adults.  The adults will die slowly, but he won't get any more worms because the medication kills the babies.  He will be heart worm free in a couple of years. If Sam is placed in an area with little instance of heartworm, the new owner will need to discuss preventative requirements for other dogs in their care.

Right now, he is almost hairless. Petsmart gave up trying to de-mat him and just went for the full on shave down. He is covered in fuzz with a lion pouf on the end of his tail. In other words, he looks completely ridiculous. Also, he goes for his first heartworm visit next week. He is tiny, about 65 pounds. He'll probably gain 10 or so with me, but he is still very tiny. He's really small with no hair.

The vet assistants put him at about 3 years old, and although he is underweight, he isn't going to be anywhere near Leo sized. He got his rabies vaccination yesterday, so Monday he goes to the groomer to be shaved down. The boy is covered in mats.

The good news is that he is well-trained, sweet natured, happy, good with kids, and a polite treat taker. So far, he is house trained. We'll see how long that lasts. We are still in our honeymoon period, but I am hopeful as my blinds are still intact. The bad news is that he is tested low positive for heart worms. Also, he is matted beyond belief, and I can't bring him to Petsmart to be shaved down until I get his rabies paperwork.
