Update 2/17/2009

Since picking her up in Texas in January 2008, Mika has settled in with her new family in Colorado and loves our trips up to Canada and to Oregon that we do repeatedly each year. She lives with our other Leo, Niko, who is now 9. Whenever Niko lays down, she lays right next to him. As Bill and I were tongue-tied with Niko and Mika, we have adjusted her name to now be Misha. Misha is a very happy Leo who is not yet fully through the chewing phase of life, but we can't remember life without two Leos and couldn't be happier ourselves. As to the chewing, she turned a new hose into the ultimate long-lasting chew toy. I cut it into different lengths and have left it in the yard--it has reduced though not completely eliminated her chewing of the various parts of the sprinkler system. Thank you all for your great work in saving Misha and other Leos. We couldn't be more satisfied with this wonderful addition to our lives. She loves playing in the hills of Colorado---tried to catch a ground squirrel in the mountains today, to no avail. She and Niko love playing on the beach (chasing seagulls, throwing clam shells into the air, running into the surf) in Manzanita, Oregon and Misha is very happy to visit Canada---especially when the customs officials at the border and the ticket takers at ferry terminals give her treats. She has now been with us for a year. At her vet check-up last week to get updated shots, she weighed 101 pounds. She is helping to keep Niko young as they wrestle together all the time, coming into the house with very wet necks from their antics. While Niko spends time at a local dog park checking the 'pee mail', Misha, who is very social, tries to tease other dogs into playing with her. Many can't resist her charms. Niko and Misha fill up our van on our cross-country drives and are great travelers and have wonderful manners in the many hotels they've been in. Like all Leo caretakers, on daily walks with Bill, or at the dog park, or at rest stops on our travels, we answer the usual questions. "They're beautiful, what are they? Can you ride them? Do you walk them or do they walk you? I bet they eat a lot. Where do they sleep?" They are beautiful and they keep us smiling.
